The build continues...

We continued to build even as the rainy season slowly ‘trickled in’- in frequency terms only. When it did shower, it absolutely poured down from heaven! Fortunately, it rained mostly at night allowing us to work throughout the day. However, the heat was often intolerable, so we took frequent breaks from the unforgivable sun to drink bottled water - albeit warm as tea but somehow satisfying- and sit under the few tall trees.

The final touches go on Ennie and Michaels home (below) – the metal roof sheeting and everyone was getting excited for the finished product!

The Zambians seemed unaffected by the sweltering heat the first week, but by the second even they seemed to take it easy during the hottest part of the day. Best travel item I packed – rehydration crystals! Even after traveling to South America, the Caribbean, North Africa and the Mediterranean, this was still by far the most humid and heat-drenched spot I have ever been (let alone worked in!). And it was certainly the heaviest rains I have ever witnessed as well!

But our hard work and determination was all well-worth it! With the help of the hired masons, Godwin and Million, who guided us through the laying of bricks and mortar, we finished Michael & Ennie’s home (only the laying of cement on the floor & finishing windows & doors was left -a job we could not help with). In the case of Barbera & Irad's home, we finished most of the brickwork so their roof & floor would likely have been completed the week after we left.
